Wallets should give you 4 connections from start and should begin synchronizing immediately and fast.
You easily can get more connections by opening Port 31415 for incoming connections manually or activating uPNP at your router and the wallet.

Unfortunately the Windows wallet some times has problems finding connections. The solution is very simple.
Just open the Help Menu, then click on the Debug Window and go to Console Tab. There Copy and Paste the following lines, one by one and click enter after each entry.
